FWD study examines the value of Wholesale

The Federation of Wholesale Distributors (FWD) has commissioned a study to highlight the influence of the independent supply chain on the UK economy.

Todays-interior1-290_141The study, carried out by Capital Economics, will emphasize the value of the wholesale industry to political figures and the media through analysis of increased business revenue and employment due to wholesaling.

Early results suggest that the wholesale industry has a £30bn turnover with a £36bn source value chain. 130,000 jobs are created by the industry, with a total of 500,000 when the independent food and services industry is included. The wholesale industry is a bigger national contributor to the UK economy than Tesco.

The study, which will be released in its entirety in the autumn, is thought to highlight the key retailer wholesaler relationship, giving advice on how to continue to promote growth in both sectors.
