Today’s Conlig Store featured in local newspapers!

A new Today’s Symbol Store in Ireland has been praised in its local newspapers including County Down Spectator and Ards Chronicle.Today's Conlig 290 x 141

The article reads…

After being closed for several years and in danger of becoming derelict the old convenience store in Conlig Square has recently been brought back to life by couple John and Karen Harrison.

Speaking with them about their vision for the new Today’s Local store, it is very clear that it has already become an integral part of the local community since opening on 5th September last year.

The couple are really enthusiastic and dedicated to making the store a success. Even though they have a young family and have to juggle their work commitments with things like school runs etc. They still put in long hours both at the shop and at home. When I asked John how they worked as a team, John jokingly replied ‘Karen is the brains and I’m the worker!’

So why did they decide to open the store? John said ‘After many years in the building industry I was made redundant due to the downturn in housing. Myself and Karen decided that maybe it was time to take a risk by ourselves, instead of depending on an employer. We scoured around and looked at a variety of options before finally speaking with a company called Savage and Whitten. Based in Newry, they run the Today’s Local brand and we were really impressed by what they do and, in particular, the support they offer and the range of products at great prices. After that, it really was only a matter of where we wanted to base ourselves’.

As Karen elaborated ‘We wanted somewhere that instead of just a business we felt like part of the community. This is what drew us to the Conlig location’.

As proof of this John funded a fireworks display at Halloween and has also purchased a delivery van in which he delivers all around the local area. ‘We have found that as well as actually calling in to buy something a lot of people drop in for a chat. We feel that the shop has become something of a hub for the community!’ said John.

As well as the great range of groceries you would expect from a Today’s Local, and also stocking your favourite newspapers, the County Down Spectator and Ards Chronicle, they also have a cash machine in store and post box outside.

The final word goes to John’s wife Karen ‘It’s definitely NOT a case of here TODAY gone tomorrow, we’re definitely here to stay!’
