World Cup sales report from IRI

Sun care, cider and pizza still flying of shelves but World Cup blues dilute sales according to IRI.

Todays-news-WorldCupIRI-290_141Despite England’s early exit from the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup, the latest supermarket basket data showed that cider drinkers pushed volume sales up by nearly a third (30.1%) with 1.8m extra litres drunk last week and worth an extra £4m, while those who prefer lager bought 6.7m extra litres worth £9.9m (vs. the same week a year ago).

Total Beer Wine and Spirits (BWS) sales from Multiple Grocers were up £18.1m compared to the same week last year, but were down £31.7m on the week ending 14 June 2014, with spirits showing the biggest fall (£11.8m).

Key highlights:

  • Lager performed well, with volume up 28.9%
  • Ale and stout continued to sell more than last year, with volumes up 22.6%
  • Champagne and sparkling wine continues to be the best performing BWS category over the longer term
  • Spirits volumes showed a healthy 11.5% volume increase
